How to Handle Toddler Clothes: Should I Use a Special Detergent?

Everything that touches baby’s skin, including clothes, cloth diapers, towels, and washcloths, should be laundered with a fragrance-free, dye-free detergent.

Despite marketing claims you don’t need to buy a special laundry detergent for babies though there are a handful out there in the market. Though the first sight of a gentle for baby laundry detergent can be comforting for anxious moms, there really is no need.  Any liquid or powder or powder laundry detergent labeled free of perfume and dyes will be fine. Spot cleaner can be used for stains, but you should rinse well.

But if you want to use a baby detergent, it should not be a problem either. Unless your baby has allergies or sensitive skin issues.

How do I know if my baby's allergic to detergent?
Do a test by washing one of baby's clothes along with your clothes (since you'll be taking care of the baby, you're always in contact with her). If your baby's skin seems fine after wearing it or being exposed to your clothing and you're quite certain there's no reaction or itching, go ahead and wash all her clothes. Also if in doubt, do a Double Rinse cycle on the clothing.

Avoid using liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets with infant or toddler clothing. They can add potentially irritating fragrance and can interfere with fabric absorbancy. Liquid fabric softener may also increase flammability of all-cotton fleece, terry cloth or velour. Avoid dry cleaning. Residue from chemicals may be irritating.
